360º: Trine Struwe - Siren tongues

Villa Kultur is proud to present an exhibition by Trine Struwe. For the exhibition, Struwe has invited musician Susanne Cleworth (XURI) to compose a new sound work. The exhibition is part of the programme 360º - a new platform for emerging talents working within contemporary art.

Siren tongues

1.
Sirens are alarms - they signal imminent danger. In ancient mythology, sirens were figured as women (part bird, part fish, 100% witch). Throughout Christian art of the medieval era, sirens and their honeyed sound continued to be used as a symbol of dangerous temptation embodied by women.

We live in a time of perpetual alarm with crises intersecting continuously. What might the siren sound like today?

2.
I gave birth to my daughter in September and since then I have slept very little. I lie awake at night and listen to her breathing. It is the little pauses that make my heart race, the silences in between.

The exhibition is kindly supported by Rådet For Visuel Kunst, The Danish Arts Foundation, Poul Johansen Fonden, Østerbropuljen, The Danish Art Workshops and Inter Arts Center at Lund University.
